The band originated from a casual, late-night jam session at a Los Angeles bar called Gold Diggers. The four musicians—each widely known for their work in prominent indie-rock and experimental electronic projects—wanted to lean into their unspoken roots and love for classic jam band culture, progressive rock, and 1970s-style improvisation (evoking sounds reminiscent of the Grateful Dead, Traffic, and Yes).

True to their name, Taper's Choice enthusiastically embraces the taping community, releasing early live performances as Choice Tapes on Bandcamp before dropping their hybrid archival-studio release, History of Taper's Choice Vol. 1, in 2023. They followed this up with their first formal studio record, Prog Hat, in late 2025. They operate as a modern, tongue-in-cheek powerhouse in the American live-music circuit.
