We catch up on all the latest news from Halloween weekend - and discuss the death of Donna Jean Godchaux-MacKay (1947–2025) Born in Florence, Alabama, Donna Jean began her career as a session singer in Muscle Shoals, lending her powerhouse vocals to iconic tracks like When a Man Loves a Woman and Suspicious Minds. In 1971, she joined the Grateful Dead alongside her husband Keith, becoming the band’s only female vocalist of the classic era. Her soulful harmonies defined the Dead’s mid-’70s sound, from Wake of the Flood through Shakedown Street. After the Dead, she continued performing and recording, most recently with the Donna Jean Godchaux Band and collaborations within the extended Dead family.
